Oliver Muller, a versatile composer, arranger, and conductor from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, has received notable commissions and performances from institutions like The Australian Voices and the Queensland Conservatorium, and Southern Cross Soloists, showcasing diverse styles from didgeridoo quintets to choral and orchestral works. Grounded in his multifaceted musical journey as a chorister, percussionist, jazz drummer/bassist, and now a bassoonist, Oliver's inventive and expressive compositional language reflects his playful and emotional musical imagination.
Recent achievements include a lauded orchestral commission, "The Fear of Losing Touch," and upcoming performances with Adelaide Horn Jam, Bella Canna Strings, and Melbourne-based Hustle Quartet. Originating from the Sunshine Coast with a background as a percussionist, jazz drummer/bassist, chorister, and now a bassoonist, Oliver's compositions reflect a unique perspective shaped by his multifaceted musical journey. Recent years have witnessed Oliver's collaborative prowess taking center stage, exemplified by his orchestral commission, "The Fear of Losing Touch," showcased by the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Johannes Fritzsch. Faculty members lauded the piece as "one of, if not the best work to come out of the Conservatorium in the last 10 years." A commissioned premiere by The Australian Voices in late 2022 paved the way for his involvement in the Australian Youth Orchestra’s 2023 Orchestral Management Program. Following an impactful two weeks as an orchestra manager, connecting with Australia’s finest emerging and professional artists, Oliver was extended a full-time position.
Currently based in Naarm (Melbourne), Oliver dedicates his 9-5 to be the Music Librarian and Operations Coordinator with the Australian Youth Orchestra. Simultaneously, he is immersed in crafting new chamber works slated for premieres in 2024 with ensembles such as Adelaide Horn Jam, Bella Canna Strings, and Hustle Quartet. Beyond his fervour for composing and his professional commitments, Oliver can be found with bassoon or baton in hand, contributing to various community ensembles, and immersing himself in the rich cultural tapestry of Melbourne.
